Son de Mexico Folkloric Ballet
The folkloric ballet “Son de Mexico” was started 5 years ago, in May 2005, in the delegation of San Juan Cosala, under the direction of Luis Guzman, General Manager of the ballet and Director of Culture and Education for Jocotepec. Luis, a Mexican native, has tried to strengthen the local culture by establishing new parameters in the scenic presentation of Mexican folkloric dance.
This approach has resulted in great artistic success with more than 20,000 attendees, the majority being from the foreign community, at public and private functions, including three successful seasons at the Ajijic auditorium. To date, “Son de Mexico” has made over 120 presentations throughout the length and breadth of the shore of Lake Chapala and the State of Jalisco, engaging in cultural exchanges, private functions and charitable events.

A very important presentation was in May 2006, when “Son de Mexico” was invited by the Jalisco Minister of Culture to participate, along with groups from Columbia, Ecuador and Spain, in the festival and tribute to Jalisco writer, Juan Rulfo, in San Gabriel, Jalisco at the ex-hacienda “El Campana”, where the writer lived during his childhood. Also, in September 2006, “Son de Mexico” was invited to the International Mariachi & Charreria Festival that took place in Guadalajara at Plaza Melchior Ocampo, as an extension to the city of Morelia, Michoacan.

“Son de Mexico”, tireless fighters in promoting their locality and municipality, was invited back in 2008 by the International Mariachi & Charreria Festival to present a gala performance at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara on September 17, 2008, an event that was an interpretation and staging of “The Poem of the Rebozo” by the Michoacan poet, Francisco Elizalde.

The recent call for stimulus to artistic creation by CECA (the Jalisco State Council for Culture and the Arts) resulted in “Son de Mexico” being the winner and recipient of the 2009-2010 grant, in the category of folk dance, for their project “Sounds of Blas Galindo, and Mexican Nationalism“, which was released in January 2010. This project was thought out and created on the basis of Mexican history. During the 55 minute spectacle, the spectator will be able to visualize, in scenes with 30 dancers, each of the most important stages of the Mexican Republic, harmonized with Mexican sounds interpreted from the symphonic compositions by the Jalisco artist, Blas Galindo, and with wardrobe designs reminiscent of traditional Mexican toy stores.

During the development of this project, the Son de Mexico ballet has performed in the most important theaters in the municipalities of San Gabriel, Lagos de Moreno, Tepatitlan, Zapotlanejo, Chapala, Guadalajara, Tizipan, Jocotepec and others with more than 12,000 spectators enjoying this performance during the first six months of promotion.

“Son de Mexico” has been invited to represent Mexico at the Third International Forum of Cultures being held in Valparaiso, Chile, from October 25-30, 2010. Once they reach Chile, ground transportation, meals and lodging are being provided but the airfare for all 30 “Son de Mexico” members is very expensive. Therefore, we are soliciting community support to help them achieve this goal. Several fundraising events have been planned over the next few months to assist in raising money for their trip. Your help and contributions in this regard will be very much appreciated.
