Lopez Vega Brothers Exhibit in Ajijic
On Friday, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. upstairs in Actinver, there will be a cocktail to inaugurate the exhibition of “Los Hermanos Lopez Vega”. The show will continue through the following week during office hours, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Friday, December 3, 2010.
Antonio Lopez Vega and Jesus Lopez Vega, both native to Ajijic will be exhibiting their works together for the first time. Although they share influences, they have different and complimentary styles, approaching art from a common ancestry, filtered by distinct perspectives and life experiences. Both brothers are former alumni of the Neill James art program and began drawing and painting from an early age.

Antonio spent 15 years teaching at the Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende and is better known there and in Mexico City than here at home. His rendition of Emiliano Zapata, a portion of the mural painted inside the registro civil in Ajijic, graces this month’s LCR cover (full article in centerfold). Two years ago, he returned to Ajijic after a nearly 20-year absence where he again is dedicating himself to painting and the education of a new generation of Lakeside artists.

His younger brother, Jesus Lopez Vega, is a well-known local painter and muralist. His mural, “Los Heroes de Mezcala” is located along the malecon in Ajijic. It took second prize in this year’s mural contest. Another mural, which covers two floors and the ceiling inside the Ajijic Cultural Center is a must-see for visitors and art enthusiasts. It is a pictorial histogram of the Lake Chapala area from ancient lake deities to the present and impacts the viewer on both visual and emotional levels. In many of his canvases, the “fantastical” intermingles with the mundane and you are as likely to see a skeleton riding a fish as a familiar landscape.

If you haven’t yet seen the works of these two brothers, or are already building your collection, be sure to check out the joint exhibit at the end of this month in Ajijic.
