December 2023 Ajijic Events

December 4 Four days after the San Andre's Fiesta is over, the 9-day Fiesta de Guadalupe starts in the Guadalupe parish on the west side of town near 6 Esquinas. It concludes on December 12, which is Guadalupe Day all over Mexico, as the Virgin of Guadalupe is the Patron Saint of all of Mexico, and loved and revered by nearly all Mexicans. The above mentioned Fiesta schedule will be happening in the Seis Esquinas area for 9 days, with a final procession around town on the 12th. This procession usually begins at the Guadalupe Church, heads east on Calle Ocampo y Constitucion, up Calle Galeana to Calle Zaragoza, and back to Seis Esquinas with fiesta complete with bandas, castillos, and fireworks. Calle Ocampo is usually closed down at night for the fiesta activity.

December 12 Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrations. The most highly honored saint. Many celebrations today, banks and government offices closed.

December 12 San Juan Cosala has a one night only fiesta and procession for Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Christmas Posadas, usually 9, begin a few days after Dia de Guadalupe. The schedule will be posted in front of San Andre's Church. Look for decorated streamers and pinatas overhead on the streets for a posada. Children are given candy and toys and the hosts always appreciate donations.

There is one on Venustiano Carranza and Galeana at pm at the Lopez tienda. Donations accepted at this tienda.

December 24/25 Christmas is usually celebrated Christmas Eve, Noche Buena. The baby Jesus is placed in the cresche on this night. After mass, people celebrate with family or block parties and burn bonfires on the street. I was told the bonfires represent the way to Bethlehem but I may be mistaken. But they are a tradition.

Schools and public offices are closed down for two weeks over Christmas.

December 31 New Year's Eve events begin at 5pm at Plaza Ajijic. Food, Live Bands ending with Fireworks at Midnight. New Year's Eve Block parties til dawn.
